This is a question that has plagued me for a long time. Every article you ever read about using a paper planner, always says you must carry your planner everywhere. Everywhere means everywhere. Not just to and from work.

I’ve been no different. For the last 20 years, I’ve carried my planner everywhere. This has a led to a lot of debates on planner sizes, rethinking bag choices and even risking permanent neck damage.

I’ve come to realize that I don’t carry my planner everywhere because I really need it all the time. I carry it because I want it all the time.

Not many people will understand this… but my planner is like my security blanket. I just can’t let go of it. I feel comforted when I have my planner with me, even if I know I’m not going to be looking at it.

There are however, some very good arguments to why you should carry your planner everywhere. Here are some of them:

  • You will always have a place to write quick notes
  • You never know when you may need to book something in your calendar
  • Your planner may have important reference information
  • Your planner may have important information that could help in a medical emergency

I’m sure there are more reasons. But, these seem to be the most valid.

Most people these days won’t understand this at all. We have something that performs all these functions and more, and we never let it out of our sight. And that’s out cell phone.

You can make a quick trip anywhere and leave your bag behind. But I doubt you’ll be leaving your cellphone.

This is ever truer these days. The thought of taking my planner out and exposing it to germs is out of the question.

So why then should I be carrying my planner everywhere.

Do I really have to carry my planner everywhere? … Probably not.

But I really want to carry my planner everywhere… and I probably will.
